Named after botanist Sir Joseph Banks 1743–1820, who accompanied Captain Cook on his voyage to Australia in 1770.

The main suburbs include Allawah, Carlton (part), Connells Point, East Hills, Lugarno, Mortdale, Oatley, Panania, Padstown, Padstown Heights, Hurstville Grove, Picnic Point, Revesby, Riverwood and South Hurstville.
