Voting in Australia

We have a range of easy-to-use resources designed to explain our federal electoral system.

Get fact sheets, magazines, the materials to conduct your own election or try out our practise voting tool.

The Act

After each federal election the AEC sends letters to people who appear to have failed to cast a vote. If you’ve received a letter, it outlines your option to either pay the $20 penalty or provide a valid reason.

Redistributions

The Electoral Commissioner must determine how many House of Representatives seats each state and territory will have at the next federal election.

This happens one year after a new House of Representatives first meets – due sometime in July/August 2020. The AEC will not provide any hypotheses in advance.
