What are annual returns?

Annual returns provide financial information, such as donations and expenditure, for a financial year. (Election returns provide financial information related to federal elections.)

Who needs to lodge an annual return?

  • Political parties and their state or territory branches
  • Significant third parties
  • Associated entities
  • Members of the House of Representatives (MPs)
  • Senators
  • Third parties that incur electoral expenditure above the disclosure threshold
  • Donors that provide one or more donations totalling more than the disclosure threshold to a political party, significant third party, associated entity, MP or Senator (annual donors).

When are annual returns due?

Registered political parties and their state and territory branches, significant third parties, and associated entities must lodge an annual return by 20 October each year.

MPs and senators who receive one or more gifts for federal purposes must lodge an annual return by 17 November each year.

Third parties that incur electoral expenditure above the disclosure threshold must lodge an annual return by 17 November each year.

Annual donors must lodge an annual return by 17 November each year.

How to lodge an annual return

Annual returns can be lodged through the eReturns portal.

To use eReturns you need a username and password.

Publication of annual returns

The AEC is required to publish annual returns on the Transparency Register. Go to the Transparency Register to see published returns.

Annual returns are published on the first working day in February each year.
