Election 2010: Don't forget to vote today!

21 August 2010

Australian voters are reminded that today, Saturday 21 August, is election day and it is compulsory for every enrolled Australian to vote in the federal election.

"Today, over 7 700 polling places around Australia will be open for voting at 8am and will close at 6pm sharp," said Electoral Commissioner Mr Ed Killesteyn.

The location of polling places can be found using the polling place locator or by calling 13 23 26.

Mr Killesteyn said that voters unable to vote at their local polling place today but who are still in their home state or territory can cast an absent vote at any polling place within their state or territory.

If voters are in another state or territory today, they can only cast their vote at an Interstate Voting Centre or AEC Divisional Office.

To find the locations of Divisional Offices and Interstate Voting Centres visit the polling place locator or call 13 23 26.

For more information on voting, try the practice voting tool or call 13 23 26.

A few overseas missions with similar time-zones to Australia may offer limited voting hours today. Overseas voting cannot continue after 6pm West Australian time on election day in Australia.
