14 August 2010
A recent High Court decision means eligible people, who submitted a correctly completed enrolment form after 8pm on Monday 19 July but before 8pm on Monday 26 July, will be entitled to vote at the 21 August 2010 federal election.
If you are one of these people, the AEC will attempt to contact you by mail. From Tuesday 17 August you can check your enrolment details online. If you think that you might be affected by this decision, and you do not hear from us by 19 August, please call us on 13 23 26 and we will check your enrolment for you.
You can vote at this election, but the AEC recommends that you:
The AEC will print supplementary lists of voters and distribute to polling places. When you go to vote, a polling official will advise you on your voting options, which will depend on whether you are voting in or outside your electorate or state.
If you are voting in your electorate on election day, your name will be marked off the supplementary list of voters and you will cast an ordinary vote.
If you are voting outside your electorate on election day your name will not be on the supplementary list of voters at the polling place and you will have to make an absent vote. This means your ballot papers will be placed in an envelope with your name, enrolled address and signature on it. This becomes the record that you have voted.
If you cannot get to a polling place on election day, you may vote at an early voting centre or apply for a postal vote. Early voting centres will not have the supplementary list of voters.
Your driver's licence or passport are acceptable forms of evidence of identity.
If you have already cast an early vote in this election – either by post or at an early voting centre – you cannot vote again. It is an offence to vote more than once.
For further information about your enrolment or voting call the AEC on 13 23 26.
