Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) staff will be on hand at citizenship ceremonies across the country to assist thousands of new citizens to enrol and join over 15 million fellow Australians who are already enrolled to vote.
Electoral Commissioner, Tom Rogers said Australia Day is a time to celebrate everything about being Australian, including our right to vote.
“A federal election will be held in 2016 and Australia Day provides a great reminder to all Australians to go online and check to make sure they are correctly enrolled and ready to vote,” Mr Rogers said.
“Enrolling and voting is a fundamental right and responsibility for all Australian citizens 18 years and over. Enrolment and voting is compulsory and you must be enrolled before you can vote in Australian elections.
“In 2014-15 AEC officers attended more than 1 500 citizenship ceremonies across Australia, enrolling over 100 000 new citizens so they can have their say at election time,” Mr Rogers said.
