Proposed federal electoral boundaries for Western Australia released

Updated: 21 August 2015

Impact on Canning by-election: Note that the federal redistribution proposal has no effect on the by-election in the federal electoral division of Canning to be held on 19 September 2015. The electoral boundaries that were in place for Canning at the 2013 federal election will also apply for the by-election.

Eligible electors who have moved into, or out of, the electoral division of Canning since the 2013 federal election should ensure their details are up-to-date before the roll closes for the by-election at 8pm AWST 24 August 2015.

The Redistribution Committee for Western Australia today published its report on the state’s proposed federal electoral boundaries.

The report details the Redistribution Committee’s proposed redistribution of Western Australia’s federal electoral divisions. This follows an increase in entitlement from 15 to 16 seats that was determined by the Electoral Commissioner in November 2014, in accordance with the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.

The Chair of the Redistribution Committee and Electoral Commissioner, Tom Rogers, said the Redistribution Committee has proposed a new division, named Burt, to be located in the south-east corner of the Perth metropolitan area centring on Gosnells and Armadale.

"The proposed new federal electoral division name of Burt honours successive generations of the Burt family for their significant contributions to the justice system and for their wider contributions to public service," Mr Rogers said.

In making its proposal, the Redistribution Committee considered enrolment numbers (current and projected), public suggestions and comments on suggestions, communities of interest, communication and transport links, geographic or constructed features able to be used as readily identifiable electoral boundaries, and the current federal electoral boundaries.

"The consultative nature of the redistribution process continues, with individuals and organisations now able to lodge objections to the Redistribution Committee’s proposed names and boundaries," Mr Rogers said.

Written objections must be lodged no later than 6pm AWST Friday 18 September 2015. The best way to lodge an objection is online.
