AEC statement: Use of ballot paper image in West Australian newspaper

Updated: 19 April 2025

The AEC wishes to clarify for voters that a full-page depiction of an apparent ballot paper in the West Australian newspaper on Saturday 19 April is not in any way connected with the AEC. The AEC is concerned that the use of its logo and the Commonwealth crest without permission could mislead voters about the origin of the information.

Readers will note the absence of any authorisation statement on the publication. The AEC always authorises advertising material.

The AEC is disappointed by the use of this image because it risks misleading voters ahead of the start of polling about how to cast a formal vote, and it risks bringing into question the strict political neutrality of the AEC. While the intent of the image, and who is behind it, may seem obvious to some - it may not to others. Clarity about the source of electoral communications and the appropriate use of the AEC logo is very important. Likewise, it is critical that people are very clear in their communication when it concerns the correct way to complete a ballot paper (the use of consecutive numbers in the order of a voter's choice).

The Electoral Commissioner wrote directly to the West Australian regarding this matter on the day the publication occurred. He has also requested that a clarifying note be included in future editions of the West Australian.
