Queensland federal redistribution deferred
Updated: 28 March 2025
As required by the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, the scheduled redistribution of
Queensland’s federal electorates has been deferred until after the next federal election.
The redistribution has been deferred as its anniversary date of 27 March 2025 falls within the last 12 months
of the current parliament.
Queensland’s federal electorates had been due for a redistribution as it has now been seven years since
the state’s last redistribution. Following the deferral, Queensland’s redistribution will now
start within 30 days of the first meeting of the House of Representatives after the 2025 federal election.

Editor’s notes:
- Queensland’s last redistribution of federal electorates was finalised on 27 March 2017.
- Sub-section 59(4) of the Electoral Act requires that a redistribution shall not commence within one year
before the date of expiry of a House of Representatives by effluxion of time.
- The current House of Representatives is due to expire on 25 July 2025; however, a federal election for
both the House of Representatives and half of the Senate must be held on or before mid-May 2025.
- Queensland’s redistribution will not change the state’s entitlement to 30 Members of the House
of Representatives.
- The next determination of the number of members of the House of Representatives Queensland is entitled
to will be made after the House of Representatives has continued to meet for 12 months following the first
meeting day in the 48th Parliament. Should this determination result in a change to Queensland’s
entitlement to members of the House of Representatives, a redistribution would be triggered at that time.
- A redistribution of federal electorates is not related to the redistribution of state electoral districts.
Questions about state electoral boundaries should be put to the Electoral
Commission of Queensland.
