Members of the public are invited to submit written suggestions proposing changes to the boundaries and names of federal electorates in the Northern Territory.
Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said that suggestions – and other input periods – are an important part of the redistribution process, and people can propose electorate names and/or boundaries.
"Suggestions may refer to either the name of an electorate, its geographical boundaries or both," Mr Rogers said.
In making its proposal of revised electorates, the Redistribution Committee must ensure that the number of electors in each electorate meets strict numerical criteria.
"In addition to the numerical requirements, the committee will consider communities of interest, means of communication and travel, and the physical features and area of the proposed divisions," Mr Rogers said.
"While the boundaries of the existing federal electorates are being considered, the Northern Territory’s entitlement in the House of Representatives remains the same with 2 electorates."
Importantly, members of the House of Representatives elected at the 2022 federal election, and in federal by-elections since that time, will continue to represent their respective electorates until the next federal election.
Suggestions must be received by the Redistribution Committee by 6pm ACST on Friday 14 June 2024.
