2024 Cook by-election: Saturday 13 April

Updated: 11 March 2024

The Speaker of the House of Representatives has announced that a by-election for the federal electoral division of Cook (NSW) will be held on Saturday 13 April 2024.

Cook is an inner metropolitan seat. It covers an area from Kurnell and Cronulla in the east to Sylvania and Gymea Bay in the west and from Kyle Bay, Monterey and Botany Bay in the north to Dents Creek and Hacking River in the south. Cook covers an area of approximately 94 sq km and is located approximately 24 km South of Sydney’s CBD.

The AEC’s NSW State Manager, Rebecca Main said the by-election follows the recent resignation of the former member for Cook who was first elected to represent the electorate at the 2007 federal election.

“A by-election occurs where there is a vacancy in the House of Representatives and it means that the local community for Cook will be able to continue to have federal representation,” Ms Main said.

“If you live in the division of Cook, have recently moved to the area or are a local resident who has turned 18, then you should check your enrolment details at aec.gov.au now.”

Postal voting is available for the by-election and applications are now available on the AEC website.

The AEC is recruiting people to work for us at the Cook by-election.

Most positions are for a single day but some stretch over a few weeks. The AEC will primarily be looking for people to be polling officials – to mark people off the electoral roll, be queue controllers, guard ballot boxes, and issue and count votes.
