Victorian federal redistribution: Suggestions open

Updated: 25 October 2023

The AEC has today invited members of the public to submit written suggestions about the redistribution of federal electoral divisions in Victoria.

Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said that public suggestions – and other public input periods – are an important part of the redistribution process, and people can propose division names and/or boundaries.

“The independent Redistribution Committee will consider existing boundaries, however the recent entitlement determination confirmed Victoria’s entitlement to seats in the House of Representatives is decreasing from 39 to 38, and this will require most of the state’s federal divisions to be altered to some degree.” Mr Rogers said.

“Carrying out regular reviews of federal divisions is essential to the maintenance of our fair, open and internationally admired Australian electoral system.”

It’s important to note that the members of the House of Representatives elected at the 2022 federal election, and in federal by-elections since that time, will continue to represent their respective electoral divisions until the next federal election.

Suggestions may refer to the names of electoral divisions, which division should be abolished, divisional boundaries, or a combination of all of these elements.

Submitting a suggestion

- Online via the VIC redistribution page
- Post: Redistribution Committee for Victoria, Australian Electoral Commission, Locked Bag 4007, Canberra ACT 2601
- Fax: 02 6215 9970

Suggestions must be received by the Redistribution Committee by 6pm AEDT on Friday 24 November 2023.

The Redistribution Committee will continue its consultation process by making all suggestions received available for public inspection from Monday 27 November 2023. The public will then have until 6pm AEDT on Friday 8 December 2023 to lodge written comments on the suggestions.

The Redistribution Committee will then review all ideas, suggestions, and comments, and release the proposed division names and boundaries in early to mid 2024.

Editor’s notes:

  • Further information about the redistribution process
  • Enrolment and projected enrolment by electoral division, SA2 and SA1, together with explanatory material, is available on the AEC website. The SA1s used for this redistribution are those used for the 2021 Census.
  • It is important to note that this is a federal process and is not related to the electoral structure reviews of Victoria’s local government (metropolitan, regional, city, and rural shire councils).  Information can be found on Victoria's electoral structure review website.
