Initial funding payments made for the 2022 federal election

Updated: 20 June 2022

The AEC has made initial election funding payments totalling $713,952 to eligible political parties and candidates for the 2022 federal election.

Initial payments

Parties and candidates who received the required four per cent of the formal first preference vote at the 2022 federal election have received an initial payment of $10,656. This initial payment amount is provided pursuant to the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 and is an indexed figure.

The initial payment was not dependent on a demonstration of electoral expenditure – it is an automatic payment. It was required to be made as soon as practicable after the 20th day following election day.

Further payments

Further election funding payments are subject to submission of a claim by the candidate or political party showing demonstrated electoral expenditure. The total amount payable is capped at the amount of actual electoral expenditure incurred by the political party, candidate or Senate group.  All claims are closely examined by the AEC before final payments are made, and many will be subject to a formal compliance review.

Election funding claims for further payments can be submitted to the AEC during the period from 10 June 2022 to 20 November 2022. The AEC will assess these claims and determinations will be published on the Transparency Register.
