The AEC’s ability to conduct fee-for-service elections is derived from the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, including sections 7A and 7B, which outline the functions of the Electoral Commissioner. These functions include the provision of electoral services and the conduct of ballots for external bodies where authorised.
The AEC may conduct elections where there is legislative authority or alignment with its statutory functions.
The AEC may conduct office-holder elections for public purpose organisations.
Services are provided on a full cost-recovery basis.
