The previous Member for Wentworth was John Hewson (LP) who represented the electorate from 1987 to 1995. He resigned from Parliament on 28 February 1995 and the writ for the by-election was issued on 3 March 1995.

A total of 78 880 electors were enrolled for the Wentworth by-election. The Divisional Returning Officer for Wentworth declared Andrew Thomson (LP) as the new Member on 18 April 1995.
