In addition to federal electoral events the AEC also conducts a range of elections and ballots as part of its Industrial and Commercial Elections Program.
The AEC conducts office bearer elections for organisations registered under the provisions of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009, its associated regulations and the relevant organisation’s rules.
Organisations conducting an industrial election through the AEC can be either trade unions or employer bodies.
The AEC conducts protected action ballots in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009, the associated regulations and Fair Work Commission orders.
Protected action ballots provide employees with an opportunity to vote on proposals for industrial action. Such ballots can only occur in the period during which an enterprise agreement is being negotiated.
The AEC conducts office bearer elections and ballots (e.g. enterprise agreement ballots) for clients who approach the AEC.
The AEC has a set of minimum standards which must be met before it will consider conducting a fee-for-service election or ballot.
The portal is available for the administration of industrial and commercial elections conducted by the AEC.
The portal provides voters, candidates and client organisations with access to information on specific elections and the ability to complete and submit relevant documentation such as nomination forms. Voters can also request post-election reports for industrial elections through the portal.
The AEC encourages relevant organisations to use this portal as it provides greater data security. In order to preserve the integrity of AEC systems, the AEC is phasing out the use of digital media, such as USBs and CDs, and email to receive data.
